We Care About People as Whole People

Kris says, “This is no different than regular first aid. If a medical situation happens, you wouldn't be caught empty handed – you would immediately act. We look at mental health the same way. We are doing our part for the safety of all of our team members.”

Andrea Evans, Director of Operations, added “Caring about people is in everything that we do. It is a part of being a leader. Food and service are easy, but caring for people and building a team that’s like a family are the most important.”

The team leaned into a tough situation in a spirit of care, sparking a lasting impact on their overall workplace culture. Their actions created a sense of belonging and demonstrated to team members that they are seen as whole people who can bring their authentic selves to work.

When team members at a Parkhurst Dining location faced a mental health crisis, our team of Parkhurst managers knew how to quickly jump in to provide support.

They leveraged the counseling resources available to all team members, but they didn’t stop there. On a deep, personal level, they were compelled to learn more! They realized that, while they might have felt more comfortable deferring to a trained professional, we all play a role in supporting our team members and improving mental health in our workplace for the benefit of all. Plus, they knew responding in the initial moments of a critical situation can directly impact outcomes for team members in crisis.

The team found additional external resources, like an online mental health first aid course, an in-person seminar, and a class offered by the university, all of which Kris Woodke, Director of Operations, attended personally.
